Hello.

Welcome to The Brief. An occasional journal.

This is a space for thoughts, news, theories, musings, and learnings. A place for me to share the weird, wonderful, nerdy, necessary, fascinating and finicky stuff that passes through my mind and fingers during the course of creating illustrations and artworks in the field of Archaeology. Welcome to my brain!

This is also a place for me to share updates on new artworks. As a self-employed artist & illustrator, I am increasingly concerned about original artworks being ‘mined’ by AI-powered image generators through the internet and social media. Such images can be used without attribution, payment or control by the original artist, and without context or explanation: a situation that is demonstrably threatening the livelihoods of freelance artists, and the veracity and integrity of imagery used within education, media, and science. This feels like a way to exert some level of control over what happens to my images after they are released into the wilds of the ‘net.

So, to introduce myself, I will not subject you to reading a CV (I’ll put that somewhere else on my site), but instead will keep it short and sweet in The Brief posts to come!

The perils of putting your cup of tea next to your dirty paintwater.
